Covent Garden history

Between the 12th and 13th centuries, Covent Garden was originally a garden of a convent (the name comes from a mispronunciation of Convent Garden). However, in 1540 Henry VII ordered its appropriation in order to turn it into a marketplace.

Covent Garden Square hosted the fruit and vegetable market from the mid-sixteenth century until 1974 (it was moved to Nine Elms, in the district of Wandsworth). The current layout of the square dates back to 1631. The indoor market was built in the early nineteenth century, after the re-development of the long-decayed area. It’s made up of three parallel buildings, separated into stalls and surrounded by neoclassical porticoes.
