Greenwich Village, Manhattan

Greenwich_Village_New_York_City
Greenwich Village is located in the heart of Manhattan, south of 14th Street. It borders East Village to the east, SoHo to the south, and Chelsea to the north. The neighborhood is also called The Village and is one of the oldest parts of New York City.

Its European-style brownstone buildings create a charming atmosphere. Since there are no skyscrapers, the area is much sunnier than elsewhere in the city.

Greenwich Village streets are narrow and patchy, not structured in a grid pattern as in the rest of the borough. Before being annexed into New York City, the Village was a rural area outside the city boundaries, and the streets still follow farms’ borders.

Greenwich Village history

When you talk about Greenwich Village, you definitely don’t think of a boring neighborhood. The Village is known for its bohemian scene and new art movements, starting with the avant-garde movements of the early 20th century.

Many artists, writers, and folk musicians settled here in the 30s and 40s. During the 50s, the neighborhood became famous for the Beat Generation scene, and it attracted many other musicians and artists.

With all these influences, new music genres were born, and artists such as Bob Dylan and Neil Diamond emerged. Dylan even mentioned The Village in some of his songs.

In this open-minded environment, the world’s first gay pride took place in 1970.

Things to do in Greenwich Village

Greenwich Village has so many exciting sights to explore that one day is definitively not enough to see it all.

Here are a few top places to stop by to experience an authentic sense of this fantastic neighborhood:

  • Washington Square Park
With its impressive arch and fountain, the park sets a gateway to the Village and New York University’s campus. Based on the Arc de Triomphe’s example in Paris, the arch was built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of George Washington’s presidential inauguration in 1892. It’s one of the favorite places for locals and tourists to enjoy a picnic watching street performers or cool off in the fountain in summer.
  • Macdougal Street
From the 20s to the 70s, it was the beating heart of The Village’s cultural scene. At 119 MacDougal Street, you’ll find Caffe Reggio, whose founder, Domenico Parisi, introduced cappuccino to the United States in the early 30s. The original coffee machine, dating back to 1902, still stands inside the cafe. Moreover, some of the Godfather II scenes were filmed here. As a result, it’s a great place to taste a real cappuccino.
  • Theatres
The Village is home to numerous small theaters founded in the late 40s and early 50s as an alternative to expensive Broadway shows. They offer all types of performances, mainly against the tide. The most famous one is The Cherry Lane Theatre, which opened in 1924. Several American playwrights such as Eugene O’Neill, Sam Shepard, and David Mamet presented their works here.
