Los Angeles Union Station history

union-station-los-angeles
Considered the last of the great train stations, Union Station is a real gem of Los Angeles, opened in 1939. Its architecture mixes several styles, including modern Streamline, Missionary Revival, Art déco, and Spanish Colonial Revival.

The station was initially planned as a cross-country junction station between the Union Pacific, Santa Fe, and Southern Pacific Railways, incorporating three local railroad terminals.

However, after a few years, it became an important hub for troop trains transporting servicemen through the terminal during World War II. With the end of the war and the diffusion of planes and cars, traffic at the station decreased, but it continued to be a vibrant part of the Los Angeles transit scene for decades.

In 1980, after being chosen as LA Historic-Cultural Monument, Union Station was also added to the National Register of Historic Places.
